Poetry Days

“David is a great poet and an excellent performer. I love his work!”

Gaby Morgan, Editorial Director, Macmillans Children’s Books

Would you like to help your pupils to develop their skills in poetry? If so, book a poetry day with David Harmer.

David is popular poet and performer who is published in many children’s books, well over 100 at the last count. He works nationally in schools and makes poetry alive and accessible.

A typical day includes a lively, fun-packed performance to all or part of the school, followed by workshops with individual classes or groups. David works alongside teachers to help pupils develop their own work, writing poetry for the page or large group performance-based pieces. There is an emphasis on enjoyment and fun, exploring the enriching possibilities that writing offers everyone. Typically, David will leave a poetry frame with colleagues after the class workshop, based on the poem devised with the children. This enables schools to follow up the work David has done after he has completed the day. Some schools ask for more than one day so that David can work with more classes. Obviously, an arrangement can be made over prices if this is the case. Typically a workshop in Foundation and Key Stage 1 needs around 35 minutes, in Key Stage 2 this is longer; perhaps 45 to 50 minutes.
